Tampa, Fla. – The Notre Dame women’s swimming team concluded a fall training trip to Florida on Oct, 23 with a convincing 158-114 victory over the University of Tampa. The Irish won 11 of 14 events in improving its dual-meet record to 1-0, while Tampa is now 0-1.
In the first event, the 200 medley relay of freshman Rebecca Grove, senior Laurie Musgrave, sophomore Christel Bouvron and senior Danielle Hulick finished first, while the relay of freshman Ellen Johnson, junior Georgia Healey, senior Lisa D’Olier and freshman Meghan Linnelli placed second.
In the 1,000 freestyle as junior Kristen Peterson finished in 10:32.25. Junior Brooke Taylor followed in 10:41.80 and junior Katie Eckholt placed fourth in 10:56.24.
The Irish dominated the 200 freestyle event, placing first, second, third and fifth. Freshman Ann Barton touched the wall in 1:55.36 in earning top honors, while senior Lisa Garcia was second in 1:55.57. Healey was third in 1:56.23 and freshman Abby Strang placed fifth in 1:59.63.
Notre Dame was first, third, fourth and seventh in the 100 backstroke as Grove finished in 59.27. Peterson was third in 1:00.88, followed by Johnson in 1:02.07 and sophomore Courtney Campbell, who was seventh, in 1:08.51. In the 100 breaststroke, freshman Jessica Stephens finished first in 1:07.97. Sophomore Annie Mantey finished fourth in 1:10.30 and junior Kelli Barton finished fifth in 1:10.38.
Notre Dame started exhibitioning a majority of its swimmers beginning with the 200 butterfly. Freshman Katie Carroll won the 200 fly in 2:06.68, while freshmen Annie Sweeney placed fourth in 2:16.73. In the 50 free, Linnelli was second in 54.80, while freshman Grace Galagan finished sixth in 27.12.
In the 100 free, Hulick won the event in 53,86. Linnelli, who had a good meet, placed third in 54.80.
In the 200 back, freshman Kiley Gooch won in 2:09.64. Ann Barton finished fourth in 2:17.66 and Campbell finished fifth in 2:17.82. In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Courtney Choura won in 2:24.71, while Sweeney placed fifth in 2:33.44. In the 500 freestyle, Strang won in 5:07.79 with Linnelli following in second in a time of 5:18.95. To conclude the meet for the Irish, Carroll won the 200 individual medley in 2:06.39.
