NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 11th-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis team blanked eighth-ranked Wake Forest 5-0 on Saturday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Senior Kimberly Guy won the decisive doubles match and then clinched the win with a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles. The Irish took advantage of a depleted Demon Deacon squad that fielded a team of five players — handing Notre Dame forfeit wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles to start the match.

The win over eighth-ranked Wake Forest marks the highest-ranked opponent the Irish have beaten since a 5-4 win at fifth-ranked Texas in 1996. Notre Dame improves to 3-1 with its third win over Wake Forest in the last four meetings and returns to the court on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. match vs. 29th-ranked North Carolina

Needing just a win at Nos. 1 or 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point, the No. 2 team of Guy and sophomore Katie Cunha jumped out to a 7-2 lead on its way to an 8-5 decision over Jackie Houston and Aimee Smith. The No. 1 doubles match was abandoned once the Irish had won the point.

Senior All-American and third-ranked Michelle Dasso won the final nine games of the match at No. 1 singles to put Notre Dame ahead 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over sixth-ranked Janet Bergman. Guy defeated Smith 6-3, 6-2 for the decisive fourth point of the match for Notre Dame. Freshman Caylan Leslie then made it 5-0 by beating Elizabeth Proctor 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. The Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches were abandoned.
