NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 13th-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis team won a pair of dual matches on Sunday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion to improve to 2-1 on the season, defeating Illinois State 7-0 followed by a 6-1 win over 72nd-ranked Western Michigan. The Irish did not drop a singles match on the day as they extended their regular-season winning streak vs. Midwest region opponents to 36 matches. Notre Dame returns to action when it plays host to Virginia Tech at 4:00 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 9 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

Notre Dame used wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point vs. Illinois State. The Redbirds No. 1 team of Alesia Mikalayeva and Liina Suurvarik edged Irish sophomore Katie Cunha and senior Kimberly Guy 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. The freshman team of Caylan Leslie and Alicia Salas clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Irish won three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. Junior Lindsey Green clinched the match by defeating Zana Friganovic 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Junior Nina Vaughan, Guy and freshman Emily Neighbours also each won three-set singles matches.

Against Western Michigan in its second match of the day, Notre Dame dropped the doubles point but then won all six singles matches for the victory. The 47th-ranked Bronco team of Larissa Chinwah and Meaghan Colville beat Cunha and Guy 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, before Green and Vaughan rallied for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles after trailing 5-6. Western Michigan’s Frederika Girsang and Mariana Quintanilla clinched the point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-6 win over Neighbours and Salas.

Salas and Green each won 6-0, 6-0 in singles, and Vaughan beat Melanie Remynse 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to lift the Irish to a 3-1 advantage. Guy then provided the clinching victory at No. 3 singles with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Frederika Girsang for a 4-1 lead.
