NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 11th-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis team won the doubles point and then swept the singles matches to defeat 61st-ranked Virginia Tech 7-0 on Friday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Senior All-American Michelle Dasso led the way with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles to pace the Irish, who improve to 3-1 with the win. Notre Dame returns to action when it plays host to eighth-ranked Wake Forest at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The eighth-ranked team of Dasso and Varnum won the first doubles match for the Irish with an 8-2 victory over Antonella Pozzi and Kristen Stubbs. After the Hokies won at No. 2 doubles, the first-time pairing of sophomore Katie Cunha and freshman Caylan Leslie rallied from 0-5 to win 8-6 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
Cunha then put the Irish ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Danielle Faucher at No. 6 singles. Junior Lindsey Green made it 3-0 by beating Kristin Lanio 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Junior Nina Vaughan then provided the clinching win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Michele Martaus at No. 3 singles. Third-ranked Dasso improved to 74-12 in her career in dual matches by defeating Stubbs 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Leslie then rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Bridget Bruner at No. 4 singles. Varnum’s 6-4, 6-4 win versus Pozzi at No. 2 singles concluded the match.
