NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 17th-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis lost just one set in sweeping 39th-ranked Maryland 9-0 on Friday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Sophomore Lindsey Green won for the fifth time in as many matches in the spring dual-match season to clinch the win. The Irish also took advantage of defaults at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles to improve to 4-1 with the win, while Maryland falls to 3-1. Notre Dame returns to action against 47th-ranked Illinois on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Maryland and Illinois will square at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Junior Kimberly Guy, senior Kelly Zalinski and Green each won in straight sets to start the match. Guy defeated Stacy Walkowitz 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to give the Irish a 3-0 lead, before Zalinski downed Catherine Valantin 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for a 4-0 lead. Green won the clincher 6-3, 6-4 over Chrissie Terrill at No. 4 singles as the Irish led 5-0.

Notre Dame then survived two tight matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Fourteenth-ranked Dasso held on to beat Delila Causevic 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 1 singles after trailing 2-5 in the second set. Varnum rallied for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Jessica Johnson at No. 2 singles. Varnum saved two break points at 5-5 in the second set and then broke serve at 6-5 to send the match into a third set. She then broke at 4-3 and saved six break points at 5-3 before ending the match on her first match point.

Notre Dame completed the 9-0 win with victories in the two doubles matches that were contested. Tenth-ranked Dasso and Varnum beat Causevic and Johnson 8-3 at No. 1 after building a 4-0 lead. The 15th-ranked team of freshman Katie Cunha and Guy beat Terrill and Valantin 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
