TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team captured three flights’ titles in doubles in final day action from the Roberta Allison Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama. The Irish went 7-1 in doubles action and 3-3 in singles. For the weekend, Notre Dame was 11-1 in doubles and 16-6 in singles.
The senior duo of Catrina and Christian Thompson captured the “Crimson” flight championship with a pair of victories Saturday. In the semifinals, the twins routed Hannah Kuervers and Dominika Zuzulova of Auburn-Montgomery, 8-1. They followed up that dominant performance with an 8-4 victory over Alex Haney and Fani Chifchieva of Auburn, 8-4.
The freshman tandem of Cobina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik captured the “Black” flight championships. Ciobanu and Krisik defeated Nadia Lysak and Natalie Sienkob of Auburn-Montgomery, 8-1, to move into the finals. The duo then defeated Take Bertrand and Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt, 8-4.
Sophomore Katie Potts and freshman Colleen Rielley captured the “Blue” flight title with two convincing victories. The tandem blanked Benson and Christie Baker of Samford, 8-0, before taking down Kelly Adams and Jill Hastenrath of Auburn, 8-3.
In the “Crimson” singles flight, the Thompson twins each dropped their respective matches. Christian lost to Bertrand of Vanderbilt, 6-1, 6-2. Catrina was defeated by Amanda Fish, also of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Buck, who went 1-1 on Friday, rebounded with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set victory over Whitney Chappell of Auburn in the “White” singles flight.
Rielley beat Courtney Ulery of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 6-2, while Kelcy Tefft dropped her match to Haney of Auburn, 6-4, 6-1. The two would have played for the “Black” flight title, but coaches decided to adjust the brackets to avoid players from the same team playing against one another.
In action from the “Blue” flight, Ciobanu beat Andrea Brenes of Auburn, 6-1, 6-0. Potts lost her match to Newman of Vanderbilt, 7-5, 6-4.
Krisik was the final Irish player in action and she beat Emily White of Samford, 6-2, 6-0.
Notre Dame returns to action next weekend at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The Thompson twins will compete at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
