LEXINGTON, Ky. –
The seventh-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis team improved to 15-3 on the season as the Irish defeated #35 Kentucky 5-2.
Notre Dame swept all three of the doubles matches and won four of six singles matches in the victory. The No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Dasson and Becky Varnum, ranked eighth in the country, defeated 44th-ranked Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten 8-4. Brooke Skeen and Lauren Rookledge, the 25th ranked doubles tandem, beat Katie Cunha and Kim Guy 6-2 at No.2 doubles. The Irish earned the doubles point when its No. 3 tandem of Lindsey Green and Nina Vaughan beat Shannon Stafford and Leigh Bradwell 8-2.
Dasso, ranked fourth in singles, was upset by 77th-ranked Carolina Mayorga 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Varnum defeated Sarah Witten 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The Irish also were victorious at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots. At No. 3 singles, Vaughan, ranked 99th, beat Bradwell (79th in the country) in a come-from-behind victory 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Caylon Leslie won at No. 4 singles as she earned a 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 come from behind victory over Bradwell. Guy earned the No. 6 singles point with win against Amy Trefethen. Green suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback to Rookledge at No. 5 singles.
