ACC Women’s Golf Final Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Entering the third round of the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golf Championship, the Notre Dame women’s golf team stood seventh and was looking to move up the leaderboard on Saturday’s (April 9) final day of competition at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The Irish did just that in recording the day’s third-best score by shooting a 12-over par 296, its best round in the championship, to earn a tie for fifth with No. 28 Miami in its first-ever ACC Championship appearance. Notre Dame, ranked 54th, finished with a +33, 905 total (306-303-296).
“We’re very pleased with how we finished overall,” said head coach Susan Holt. “We were looking for a top-five finish, and it’s great to achieve it. This was a team effor,t and going into the post season, it’s great to have all five players contributing. I think we made a respectable showing in our first ACC Championship, and moving forward it gives us something to build on.”
Duke, ranked third nationally, won its third straight ACC crown with a 10-over-par 862 (291-285-286), besting second-place Virginia by 27 stokes and shooting a two-over par 286 on the final day. The No. 23 Cavaliers finished 37-over-par with a three-day total of 889 (291-299-299), while No. 26 North Carolina State finished 38-over-par 890 (308-292-290). The Wolfpack recorded Saturday’s second-lowest round with a six-over-par 290.
No. 21 North Carolina was 15-over-par on the day and finished with a +44 896 (299-298-299) to earn a fourth-place finish.
Miami began the day in fourth place, but struggled with a +22 on the final day and finished the three rounds with scores of 298-301-306 for its 908 total.
No. 25 Florida State took seventh with a +56 908 (306-299-303) and was followed by No. 17 Wake Forest with a 919 score (311-306-302). The Deamon Deacons were 67-over-par for the tournament and 18-over on the final day. Maryland and No. 12 Clemson were two strokes in back of Wake Forest with a 921 total. The Terrapins shot rounds of 306-305-310, while the Tigers registered scores of 307-304-310.
Boston College rounded out the field with a 959 (335-305-315).
Senior Kristina Nhim(Cypress, Calif.) had her best round of the tournament for the Irish with an even-par 71 on Saturday that included three birdies and 12 pars on the day. Heading into Saturday’s final round, Nhim had shot a 79 on each of the first two days. She birdied the five-par fifth, four-par ninth and five-par 18th hole. With her 71 on the final day, she finished with a 229 (+16) and ended up tied for 25th on the leaderboard.
Sophomore Talia Campbell(Dallas, Texas) posted a four-over-par 75 on Saturday with two birdies and 11 pars. Her only real snafu on the day came on the 18th hole as she double-bogeyed the final hole. Campbell was Notre Dame’s top finisher with a 10-over-par 223 total after shooting rounds of 75 and 73 the first two days. She tied for 13th overall among the 55 competitors.
Junior Kelli Oride(Lihue, Hawaii) finished with Notre Dame’s second-best score on Saturday as she posted a three-over par 74. Oride’s round consisted of birdies on the par-four first hole and five-par 15th hole and 11 pars. She ended tied for 25th overall with a three-day total of +16, 229 (77-78-74).
Freshman Jordan Ferreira(University Place, Wash.) shot a six-over-par 77 for her final round with 12 pars on the day. With a three-day total of +15, 228 (76-75-77), Ferreira was Notre Dame’s second-best finisher in the tournament as she tied for 22nd.
Like Nhim and Oride, junior Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) produced her best score of the championship on Saturday with a five-over-par 76. Armstrong’s registered two birdies on the back nine and finished with 10 pars on the day. After a double-bogey on the four-par 11th, Armstrong came back to birdie the three-par 12th hole and also had a birdie on the five-par 18th hole. She finished tied for 35th with a +18 231 (78-77-76).
