Alumna Kelly Lindsey Appointed CONIFA Director of Women's Football

LULEA, Sweden – Former University of Notre Dame standout player Kelly Lindsey was appointed as the first ever Director of Women’s Football for the Confederation of Independent Football Associations. CONIFA is the international governing body for non-FIFA affiliated associations of Association Football.

In her role with CONIFA, Lindsey will be in charge of developing women’s football across CONIFA’s membership, as well as looking to set up an inaugural Women’s World Football Cup in 2021.

Lindsey played in 91 matches over her four-year career with the Irish. She was a two-time team captain and earned first team All-BIG EAST and first team NSCAA honors in 2000. Lindsey also played for numerous levels of the US Women’s National Team (U16, U18, WNT). After her Irish career, she was selected first overall in the 2001 Women’s United Soccer Association college draft by the San Jose CyberRays.

Lindsey has been in a coaching capacity since her playing career ended in 2003. She had collegiate coaching stints at Texas, Saint Mary’s and Colorado before becoming the head coach of Sky Blue FC in the inaugural season of the Women’s Professional Soccer League.

Lindsey is currently the head coach of the Afghanistan Women’s National Team and has been in that role since 2016.
