Women's Tennis Splits Matches at ITA Kickoff in California

MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team competed in Malibu, California this weekend as part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s kickoff weekend. The Irish earned a 4-1 win over Colorado Saturday afternoon, advancing to face the host, seventh-ranked Pepperdine. Notre Dame dropped the second match of the weekend, 4-0 Sunday. . 

The opening match of the weekend started with a win for the Irish in doubles. Olivia Maria Castedo and Page Freeman combined for a 6-2 victory at No. 1. In the second position, Carrie Beckman and Julia Andreach tallied a 6-3 victory to give the Irish the first point.

Colorado tied the match up as the Buffaloes took No. 4 singles. It was all Irish after that as Notre Dame earned three straight-set victories for the win. Freeman earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 2, followed by Nibedita Ghosh’s 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 5. Andreach clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory at No. 1.

The final match of the weekend didn’t go the way of the Irish as Notre Dame fell 4-0. 

Pepperdine earned the doubles point after a pair of wins at No. 2 and 3. In singles play, the Waves took flights 4, 2 and 5 to complete the sweep.

The Irish return home next weekend as they host a pair of matches next Sunday. The competition starts at 11 a.m. with a match against the Yale Bulldogs, and is followed by a 4 p.m. match with the Northern Illinois Huskies, each at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
