ATLANTA – The University of Notre Dame volleyball team couldn’t maintain the momentum gained from a big Atlantic Coast Conference road victory at Clemson Friday night, as the Irish suffered their sixth sweep of the season in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-17) setback versus Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon at O’Keefe Gym.
Notre Dame (6-12, 1-5 ACC) never looked comfortable against the Yellow Jackets, as it hit just .019 for the match. The Irish posted 24 kills and had 22 attack errors. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, had a .289 attack percentage with 39 kills.
Usually a steady blocking team, the Irish only had three for the match with all three coming in the final frame. The Yellow Jackets had 9.5 blocks, including 7.5 combined in the first two sets
The Irish also didn’t help themselves with 10 ball-handling errors spread among four players.
Georgia Tech cruised in set one, running out to a 21-7 lead before finishing off a 25-12 victory with a kill by Teegan Van Gunst.
Notre Dame looked much better early in set two, as it held a lead as late as 11-10 and was within two as late as 15-13. However, the Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run to push the lead to 20-13 on their way to a 25-18 victory.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the final set, holding a 10-point lead at 18-8 before holding on for a 25-17 win.
Georgia Tech led from beginning to end in sets one and three. Set two featured seven ties and four lead changes.
GT setter Rebecca Martin had an outstanding match, finishing with 34 assists, seven digs, two blocks, two kills and a service ace. Libero London Ackermann tallied 17 digs.
On offense sisters Annika and Teegan Van Gunst had a combined 23 kills on 50 swings. Annika hit .429 and Teegan attacked at a .310 clip. They both posted double-doubles, combining for 24 digs.
Irish freshman libero Ryann DeJarld had 14 digs and two service aces and sophomore middle blocker Sam Fry had eight kills and three blocks to lead Notre Dame.
The Irish return home to Purcell Pavilion next weekend to meet Duke (7 p.m. ET Friday) and Wake Forest (1 p.m. ET Sunday).
