CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The No. 1 Fighting Irish suffered its second defeat of the season on Friday evening, falling to No. 8 Virginia by a score of 15-10 at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.
Notre Dame heads into the NCAA Tournament with a record of 10-2 on the season.
Four Irish players scored multiple goals in the contest, as Josh Yago, Will Angrick, Dylan Faison and Will Maheras each found the back of the net twice.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers scored twice in the first four minutes to take an early 2-0 lead before Dylan Faison muscled his way to a shot to score Notre Dame’s opening goal with 10 minutes left in the first frame.
After another Virginia goal made it 3-1 the Irish responded with two scores from Yago to level the game at 3-3 before the Cavaliers scored in the final two minutes to take a 4-3 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
The Irish tied the game back up at 4-4 off a goal from Maheras and then Virginia managed to score five of the last six goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead into the halftime break.
The Cavaliers came out of the break and tacked on another in the first minute of the third quarter to make it 10-5.
The two sides traded scores for the remainder of the stanza, each team finding the back of the net twice to make it a 12-7 game heading into the fourth frame. The Notre Dame goals came from Maheras and Faison.
Notre Dame scored twice in the first 4 minutes of the fourth to cut the deficit to three at 12-9, coming from a Luke Miller score and a goal from Angrick.
After Virginia pushed the lead back to four with a goal of its own, Angrick responded with his second of the game to make it 13-10 with 8:33 in regulation. That was as close as the Irish would get, as the Cavaliers scored the final two goals of the day to come away with the 15-10 win.
