#25 Irish Sweep Loyola Chicago To Close Opening Weekend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — #25 Notre Dame closed the Golden Dome Invitational with a Saturday night sweep (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) inside Purcell Pavilion.

Aubrey Hamilton and Charley Niego were both named to the Golden Dome Invitational’s All-Tournament Team following Notre Dame’s three matches this weekend.

Hamilton paced the Irish with 14 kills to go with a .375 hitting percentage while Niego added 10 kills. Lindsey Miller added seven kills on 14 swings while fellow middle blocker Lauren Tarnoff notched six kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Zoe Nunez earned 33 assists in the three sets of play.

Hattie Monson led Notre Dame with 13 digs and Tarnoff led all players with five blocks.

As a team, the Irish hit a weekend-best .325 while limiting the Ramblers to a mark of .098. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set
The Irish jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the opening set with help from a trio of kills by Niego. The Ramblers earned the next three points before the Irish went on a 4-0 run that included two kills by Hamilton. The Irish used a 5-0 run to eventually extend their lead to 23-14 before Meuth provided a kill to clinch the first set, 25-17.

The Irish hit a season-best .455 in the opening set with 18 kills. 

Second Set
After a back-and-forth start to the second stanza, two consecutive aces by Monson capped an Irish 4-0 run that gave the hosts a 14-8 advantage. The visitors worked to get back within one at 20-19 before the Irish earned four of the next five points to go up 24-20. A kill by Miller clinched a 25-22 set triumph and a 2-0 lead for Notre Dame. 

Third Set
After the third frame opened in a 4-4 tie, the Irish seized control with an 11-1 run to go up 15-4. Notre Dame maintained a healthy lead from there with Hamilton’s 14th kill capping off a 25-20 victory and match sweep. 

The Irish closed the contest by hitting .343 in the final set with 14 kills.
