#7 Irish In First Place at Quail Valley Collegiate

Record historic second round to overcome nine-stroke deficit

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Trailing the leader by nine strokes after round one of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate, the No. 7 Notre Dame men’s golf team rallied behind a historic round two to take the lead on Sunday.

Competing in 36 holes today, the Irish carded a program best 18-under par to overcome South Florida for the lead. The Irish enter Monday’s final round with a 547 (-29) team total, two strokes ahead of the Bulls and six ahead of Memphis.

Freshman Palmer Jackson led the way for Notre Dame with rounds of 67-66, recording just one bogey over 36 holes. His 133 (-11) total puts the Pennsylvania native in second place, one stroke back from the leader, Paul Foulquie from Kansas City.

ROUND ONE

The Irish shot a 277 (-11) in round one, led by Jackson’s 67 (-5). The freshman recoded six birdies with his lone bogey on the day coming on the par-three 16th. Sophomore Andrew O’Leary tallied two eagles on the back-nine to card a 69 (-3). Senior Davis Lamb recovered from a double-bogey on the par-five 14th with six birdies as well, ultimately finishing with a 70 (-2).

Junior Davis Chatfield also contributed toward the team tally with a 71 (-1), recording nine straight pars on the back-nine. Also in the lineup was senior Hunter Ostrom, who carded a 72 (E).

Individual competitors Patrick Kelly and Taichi Kho each came out of the gates strong, as both tallied a 69 (-3).

ROUND TWO

The previous program team low for a round was a 16-under par set at the 2006 Big East Championship. The Irish improved that mark by two strokes on Sunday with their 18-under par second round to leapfrog USF into first place.

Jackson provide another stellar round with a 66 (-6) – his best on the year.  Lamb tied his career low of 67 (-5), jumping 14 spots in the standings to ninth place.

Ostrom climbed 15 spots into 22nd with a second round 68 (-4), which included an eagle on the par-five 14th. Chatfield is tied with Ostrom in 22nd place after surging on the back-nine. The junior tallied four birdies to card a 69 (-3).

O’Leary enters the final round in 17th place. The sophomore shot a 70 (-2) in round two.

Kho recorded a career low round of 67 (-5), surging the sophomore into a tie for fifth place. Kho carded five birdies over a six-hole stretch on the back-nine.  Lastly, Kelly is tied for 22nd after
