EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis doubles duo of Greg Andrews and Spencer Talmadge advanced to Monday’s finals of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships doubles draw with an 8-6 win on Sunday over Barrett Franks and Vlad Stefan on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.
The No. 5 seeded team has ran through the competition so far this weekend as they have now topped five opponents by a combined score of 40-19 including Sunday’s 8-6 win over Franks and Stefan.
Andrews and Talmadge will meet Illinois’ Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski in the finals. The Illini duo entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed in the field.
“Spencer has always been a strong doubles player but Greg has really improved his doubles game since he arrived at Notre Dame,” said head coach Bobby Bayliss. “Reaching the finals is a testament to their hard work as they have formed themselves into a pretty good doubles team. We are excited to see how they perform tomorrow.”
The duo is looking to become the first Notre Dame doubles champion at the Midwest Regionals since Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu took home the crown in 2006. In all, four teams have won the doubles championship since 1990.
