NOTRE DAME, Ind. – On the strength of a 4-0 start to the season in singles, including a win over a top-25 foe, Notre Dame men’s tennis player Greg Andrews has been named BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week in the first voting of the 2012 season, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Andrews, who played exclusively at No. 2 singles in the season’s opening week, went 4-0 in singles, including four straight-set wins. Included in the four victories was an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 24 Roy Kalmanovich of Illinois this past Sunday. Earlier in the week, the sophomore knocked off opponents from Illinois State, Toledo and William & Mary.
The Richland, Mich., native, also teamed with Casey Watt to go 3-1 to start the year in doubles, with 8-1 wins over opponents from Illinois State and William & Mary and an 8-6 win over a twosome from Toledo. The duos lone loss came to the No. 17 Illini’s Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon, 8-6.
Andrews, the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, has helped the No. 28 Irish to a 3-1 start to the season, with only a loss to Illinois, 4-3, on the road blemishing an otherwise perfect record.
Notre Dame returns to action this weekend when it travels to Columbus, Ohio for a pair of matches. On Saturday, the Irish battle Indiana at 10 a.m., with the winner meeting the Ohio State-Cornell winner on Sunday.
