NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fresh off being named BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and helping the Irish clinch a first-round victory over No. 40 Vanderbilt in the NCAA Championships, Notre Dame sophomore Greg Andrews has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Midwest Player to Watch, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Andrews, who heads to the NCAA Singles Championships ranked No. 54 in the country, put together an impressive year in helping the Irish to a 21-9 record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Championship.
The Richland, Mich., product went 26-4 during the dual season, primarily at No. 2 singles, and 35-9 when combining the fall season in helping the Irish to its first 20-win since 2007. Along the way the team defeated eight ranked opponents and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the ninth consecutive year and 21st time in the last 22 years.
During the course of the year, Andrews was named BIG EAST Player of the Week three times and defeated five singles opponents in the spring that were ranked at the time of the match.
In doubles, Andrews went 18-9 in the spring, including 15-6 with junior Spencer Talmadge as the duo played primarily at two.
In just two years under the Golden Dome, Andrews has won 42 spring matches and been named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year (2011) and BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Player of the Year (2012).
He will now be entered into a pool with 11 other regional winners for National Player to Watch, with the winner being announced next Tuesday, May 22.
Andrews next heads to Athens, Ga., to compete at the NCAA Singles Championship from May 23-28.
