NOTRE DAME, Ind. ââ’¬” University of Notre Dame men’s soccer junior defender Brandon Aubrey was one of the key members of the Irish back line that posted a pair of shutouts at last weekend’s adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. In recognition of his strong play during the 1-0-1 opening Notre Dame weekend, Aubrey has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Player of the Week and the TopDrawerSoccer Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.
Aubrey was previously tabbed as the most valuable defensive player at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic following Notre Dame’s 1-0 win over host Indiana on Sunday. He also joined teammates Connor Klekota and Chris Hubbard as Irish representatives on the event’s all-tournament team.
Reigning Big Ten Most Valuable Offensive Player Mael Corboz of Maryland, who led the Terrapins with 10 goals last season, managed only three shots (none on goal) in 110 minutes against the Notre Dame defense on Friday. Tanner Thompson, a 2014 NSCAA first team All-American from Indiana, added three shots of his own on Sunday against the Irish, but none of the attempts were on frame.
The ACC and TopDrawerSoccer honors were the first weekly citations of Aubrey’s Notre Dame career. He has made 24 starts during his first three seasons with the Irish, notching three goals and one assist (seven points) on 17 shots. Aubrey has also been a contributor in eight team shutouts during his Notre Dame tenure since transitioning from the central midfield to his current role at center back in 2014.
No. 5/8 Notre Dame opens its 2015 regular season home schedule with the annual Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament this weekend at Alumni Stadium. The Irish host No. 24/NR South Florida on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (ET) before closing the weekend on Sunday at 2 p.m. against UAB. Sunday’s match will be available live on ESPN3.
