COLUMBUS, Ohio – Notre Dame men’s tennis players Douglas Barnard and Spencer Talmadge each picked up a pair of wins on Thursday to advance to the finals of the qualifier bracket on day one of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The pair will look to punch their ticket to the singles draw at 8 a.m. on Friday.
Barnard opened up the tournament with a straight-set victory over Aaron Wong of Western Michigan (6-3,6-2), before cruising passed Cleveland State’s Nolan Marks, 6-4,6-0. The Indianapolis, Ind., native will battle Illinois State’s Muddappa Appanervanda for the right to earn a spot in the singles draw.
The No. 10 seeded Talmadge opened up with a 6-1,6-2 victory over DePaul’s Aaron Chaffee, before dropping Toledo’s Bryant Dudzik, 6-3,6-2. The Hillsborough, Calif., native will meet Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Michael Tenzer for a berth in the singles draw.
In other action, freshman Michael Fredericka fell to Alex Lagerof of Northern Illinois, 6-1,6-2.
In addition to Barnard and Talmadge competing in singles matches on Friday, a host of other Notre Dame student-athletes will see their first action of the tournament.
