Tulsa, Okla. – University of Notre Dame senior Stephen Bass moved into the consolation finals of the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday. Bass rallied for a victory over No. 44 Peter Rodrigues of Duke and then got past Christian Groh of San Diego State. Bass took the first set, 6-0, before No. 67 Groh retired from the match.
Bass (Bronxville, N.Y./Iona Prep School), ranked No. 21 in the preseason ITA poll, dropped the opening set to Rodrigues, 6-3, but came back and took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
He moved into the consolation finals with the victory over Groh. Bass improved to 5-3 on the season and 78-38 for his career.
Bass will face No. 14 Todd Paul of Wake Forest in Sunday’s final. Paul got past No. 68 Pierre Mouillon of Cal and Will Gray of Tulsa.
This is the first of three national championship events during the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season. Two others are the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May in Athens, Ga.
