Notre Dame juniors Brittany Bock and Kerri Hanks ranked among the nation’s top forward duos during the 2007 collegiate women’s soccer season and that status has been verified by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), which included both players among its 13-player list of 2007 first team All-Americans. It marks the first time since 1995 that two forwards from the same team have received the NSCAA first team All-America designation. Bock and Hanks also were named NSCAA first team All-Great Lakes Region, as was senior F/M Amanda Cinalli while junior left back Elise Weber was a second team all-region selection (only first team all-region players are eligible for NSCAA All-America consideration).
Notre Dame joined Connecticut, North Carolina and Virginia as teams with multiple players on the NSCAA first team All-America list, as those four teams combined for eight of the 13 selections (others came from Penn State, Portland, UCLA, Purdue and Florida State). Notre Dame’s total of 39 NSCAA All-Americans during the past 14 seasons (1994-2007) trailed only UNC’s 44 among Division I teams, with Portland (28) a distant third on that list of All-Americans from ’94-’07.
Kerri Hanks is two assists shy of becoming the sixth Division I player ever to reach 60 career goals (64) and 60 assists (58).

The first four seasons of NCAA Division I women’s soccer (1982-85) – when the number of participating teams was well below 50 – each featured a pair of NSCAA first team All-America forwards from the same team, but there then were only four seasons from 1986-95 (and none since ’95) with two first-team forwards on the same squad. Those dynamic forward duos included North Carolina’s Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly (both were first teamers in 1990 and ’92), the Portland pair of Shannon MacMillan and Tiffeny Milbrett (in ’94), and UNC’s Cindy Parlow and Debbie Keller (in ’95) – an impressive group of players, most of whom went on to standout careers with the U.S. National Team.
This marks the fourth time in Notre Dame’s storied history (but first time since 1997) that multiple Irish players have been named NSCAA first team All-Americans. Bock (16) and Hanks (14) were one of three duos in the nation to each total 14-plus goals during the 2007 season, joining Florida State’s Mami Yamaguchi (24) and Sanna Talonen (18) and UCLA’s Lauren Cheney (23) and Danesha Adams (15) in that grouping.
Bock (Naperville, Ill.) – who carries a 3.25 cumulative GPA, as a marketing major – received All-America honors for the first time in her career while becoming the 51st Notre Dame student-athlete ever to couple All-America and official Academic All-America honors during the same season. She earlier was named an ESPN The Magazine second team Academic All-American, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Bock joins goalkeeper Jen Renola (’96) and defender Monica Gonzalez (’02) as Notre Dame women’s soccer players who have been All-America and Academic All-America selections in the same season (M/F Jenny Streiffer was an All-American in ’96 and ’99 and an Academic All-American in ’97 and ’98).
A three-time all-BIG EAST selection who was named the BIG EAST’s 2007 co-offensive player of the year, Bock totaled all but two of her 36 points in 2007 (16G-4A) during Notre Dame’s 17-game unbeaten streak, in 15 games played (15G-4A). She led the BIG EAST with 10 goals during conference play while her 16 total goals ranked 11th in the nation and most by any BIG EAST player. She was named the national player of the week in back-to-back weeks during a midseason stretch that saw Bock post matching nine-point weekends (4G-1A): first at Syracuse (3G) and St. John’s (1G-1A) and then at home versus Georgetown (2G) and Villanova (2G-1A). Half of Bock’s career goals with the Irish (20 of 40) have come on headers, including eight in the 2007 season (among them, the goal that opened the scoring in the 3-2 NCAA round-of-16 win at UNC). She is one of 17 all-time Notre Dame players to reach 100 career points (40G-20A) and shares the Irish record for career goals in the NCAA Tournament (10).
Hanks (Allen, Texas) was one of four players nationwide to receive NSCAA All-America honors for the third time in her career, after being a second-team selection in 2005 and a first teamer in ’06. She joins the captains of Notre Dame’s 1996 team – midfilelder Cindy Daws (’93, ’94, ’96) and goalkeeper Jen Renola (’94, ’96) – as the only Irish players ever to be NSCAA first team All-Americans in multiple seasons.
With one year of eligibility remaining, Hanks could become the 23rd player in Division I women’s soccer history ever to be a four-year NSCAA All-American. That elite list features multiple players from three programs (ND, UNC and Portland), with Notre Dame’s four-timers including midfielders Holly Manthei (1994-97) and Anne Makinen (1997-2000), plus defender Jen Grubb (1996-99). Hanks is the eighth Notre Dame player to be an NSCAA All-American in three-plus seasons, joining Manthei, Grubb, Makinen, Daws, Renola (’94-’96), outside back Kat Sobrero (’95-’97) and midfielder Jen Buczkowski (’04-’06) in that distinction.
Hanks (Allen, Texas) finished fourth nationally in scoring with 49 points in the 2007 season (14G-21A) and was one of two players nationwide with at least 12 goals and 12 assists. She led the nation in assists for the second straight season and is on the verge of becoming the sixth D-I player ever to reach 60 career goals (64) and 60 assists (58). Hanks owns an assortment of more than 60 Notre Dame records, including career points in postseason play (58; 18G-22A). Her 58 career assists already rank 11th in the NCAA record book and she is one of three D-I players ever to reach 50G-50A prior to her senior season.
Cinalli (Maple Hts, Ohio) was honored by the NSCAA as one of the elite players in the Great Lakes Region, despite somehow being shut out entirely from 2007 all-BIG EAST honors. A three-time all-BIG EAST selection and 2006 second team all-region pick (as was Bock), Cinalli was slowed by a midseason hamstring injury in 2007 but still managed to total three goals and six assists in 2007 while appearing in 21 of the 26 games. The four-year starter led the way for a senior group that helped the Irish total 91 wins during the 2004-07 seasons, making them the nation’s winningest senior class for the 2007 season. Cinalli joined Hanks and Bock in giving the 2007 Notre Dame team three players with 30-plus career goals, making the 2007 squad the first Irish team since 1999 with that distinction. One of 12 Notre Dame players ever to reach 30 career goals and 30 assists, Cinalli appeared in 100 career games and is tied for fourth on the Irish career games played list.

Weber (Elk Grove, Ill.) emerged as one of the nation’s top outside backs in the 2007 season while totaling three goals and seven assists (13 points), as a starter in all 26 games. The transfer from Wisconsin finished second on the team in assists and fourth in points while compiling one of the top point totals of any defender in the BIG EAST and yielding one of the most noteworthy offensive seasons ever by a Notre Dame defensive player. Despite being relegated to third team all-BIG EAST honors for the 2007 season, Weber was one of only 12 defenders on the midseason Hermann Trophy ballot (national player of the year). She was one of three Irish players to start all 26 games in the 2007 season and logged 2,134 minutes of game action (fourth-most on the team; 82.1/gm).
The 2007 season saw Weber deliver several key goals and assists, most notably her rocket shot that forged a 2-2 tie in the NCAA semifinal versus Florida State (shot from upper left corner of box into upper left corner of net). She made an early impact in the 2-0 win at Florida, with the cross on Bock’s diving header goal and a scored of her own later in that game. Weber later had a similar left-flank cross to Bock to help beat Connecticut in overtime and she also assisted on Bock’s goal that opened the BIG EAST semifinal versus Georgetown (2-0). She earlier scored on a direct free kick (1-0) in a 3-1 win at Seton Hall, picked up an assist on a goal by Hanks in the midseason battle with Penn State (1-0; lost 1-2) and had an assist in the 4-1 win at Syracuse – plus a pair of assists in 5-0 win over Villanova.

POTENT PAIRS – The eight previous seasons to feature teams with two forwards who were NSCAA first team All-Americans include: 1982 (UNC’s Amy Machin and Stephanie Zeh); 1983 (George Mason’s Pam Baughman and Lisa Gmitter); 1984 (UConn’s Donna MacDougall and Catherine Shankweiler); 1985 (GMU’s Baughman and Gmitter); 1990 (UNC’s Hamm and Lilly); 1992 (UNC’s Hamm and Lilly); 1994 (Portland’s MacMillan and Milbrett); and 1995 (UNC’s Parlow and Keller) … Notre Dame became the fifth different program with a pair of players owning that unique distinction.
