NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Irish men’s tennis player Brett Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) was named the BIG EAST men’s tennis Player of the Week it was announced by the BIG EAST Conference on Wednesday.
Helgeson led the Irish to two wins on Sunday, including a 5-2 defeat of 36th-ranked Duke and a 7-0 sweep of Toledo. The senior made two singles starts at the No. 1 position to go along with two first-doubles starts en route to posting four wins on the day. With the victories, the 25th-ranked Irish evened their record at 4-4 on the season.
Against Duke at first doubles, Helgeson teamed with sophomore Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan HS) to claim the doubles point. Helgeson and Davis, ranked 37th faced Duke’s 38th-ranked team of Kiril Dimitrov and Alain Michel. With the doubles point up for grabs, Helgeson and Davis held a 7-4 advantage. Helgeson then served out for the win, clinching the doubles point.
Then in singles play versus the Blue Devils, Helgeson, ranked 20th, played at first singles versus 25th-ranked Reid Carleton. Helgeson dropped the first set, 6-4, before battling back to take the second set, 7-6 (7-4). In the third-set tie-break, Helgeson won 10-6.
Against Toledo, Helgeson and Davis got the Irish off to a fast start in doubles play, taking down the Toledo tandem of Jared Miller and Nulthavit Likitkumchorn at first doubles by a perfect score of 8-0.
With the match already clinched, Helgeson kept the Irish momentum going as he earned his second victory of the day at first singles when he defeated Jared Miller in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The victory improved Helgeson to 4-3 on the dual season in singles play. All seven of the decisions have come from the first spot. He also made a first-singles start against 19th-ranked Raony Carvalho of Texas Tech that he was leading 4-6, 6-4, 3-2 when the Irish clinched the match. Helgeson has made eight dual season doubles starts, all teamed with Davis in the No. 1 position. The duo is 4-4.
Helgeson and the Irish return to the courts on Saturday, February 14 when they face Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan. The match is slated to begin at noon.
