Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A `golden goal’ from sophomore Jeb Brovsky (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) in the second overtime period gave No. 3 Notre Dame a 2-1 win at No. 19 New Mexico in an exhibition match on Wednesday evening in front of 2,451 fans at the UNM Soccer Complex. The match was the preseason opener for both teams.

In the 105th minute, Brovsky headed in a cross from classmate Josh Thiermann (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) to give the Irish the victory. The sophomore duo also had a hand in the first Notre Dame goal of the night. With the Irish trailing, 1-0, in the 66th minute, both Brovsky and Thiermann picked up an assist on the equalizer from Bright Dike (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North). Dike took a cross in front of the goal and beat Lobo goalkeeper Justin Fite.

A goal from Justin Davis in the 31st minute gave New Mexico a 1-0 lead. Davis deposited the ball in the back of the net after collecting a rebound in front of the box. That would be all the scoring in the first half and the hosts carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Junior Philip Tuttle (Hooksett, N.H./Brewster Academy) started in goal for the Fighting Irish and played the entire first half. He made two saves. Senior Andrew Quinn (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) replaced Tuttle and played the remainder of the contest, making one stop.

Fite allowed both Irish goals, while making two saves. Eric Staver played the first 59:25 in goal for the Lobos and also made two saves.

New Mexico held a 12-10 edge in shots, while Notre Dame had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Irish will wrap up the preseason with a home exhibition match against No. 16 Illinois-Chicago on Monday, Aug. 25. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Alumni Field. All proceeds from the match against the Flames will benefit Grassroot Soccer, an international AIDS awareness and education organization that reaches youth in Africa through soccer clinics. Admission to the contest is $1. Further donations are welcome.
