Burton Wins ACC Rookie Of The Week

Wins for second time this season

CHARLOTTE For the second time this season, the Atlantic Coast Conference has named Notre Dame guard Markus Burton as its Rookie of the Week. The Mishawaka native helped guide the Irish to a 1-1 week, which included a 74-66 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Burton averaged 17.5 points on 40.0 percent shooting, plus 6.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds.

Burton’s performance against Virginia Tech was one that’s only happened twice before in the last quarter of a century. Burton recorded a stat line of 16 points, a season-high tying eight assists and a season high six steals. Only Chris Thomas in 2001 and Jerian Grant in 2013 had stat lines of at least 16 points, six steals and eight assists. Not to mention his six steals tied for the third most in a single game in program history.

Burton also showed no fear in stepping into Cameron Indoor for the first time earlier in the week, pouring in a team best 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting, plus four assists.

Furthermore, Burton’s 12 total assists tied for the most in the ACC this past week. His seven steals were the second most and his 35 points were the 10th most.

Burton and the rest of the Fighting Irish return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 14, when they host Georgia Tech inside Purcell Pavilion at 7 p.m. ET. Tickets are still available for purchase online.
