CHARLOTTE – The Atlantic Coast Conference named Notre Dame guard Markus Burton its Rookie of the Week for his gritty play in the win over Virginia this past Saturday. The freshman out of Mishawaka poured in 15 points, and dished out a career-high 8 assists, to help lift the Irish to a dominant 76-54 win. It marks the first ACC weekly honor for Burton.
Burton started the game 4-for-5 and 2-for-2 from three to achieve 10 points by halftime. He ultimately finished the game 6-for-10 shooting. Eight assists against a stout Virginia defense is no easy task. It only happened twice to the Cavaliers last season, for Burton is now the first player to do it since Virginia Tech’s Justyn Mutts on Feb. 4, 2023. Burton also added three rebounds and one steal to his stat line.
Burton has been locked in as of late, recording six straight games with double-digit points. In fact, he’s amassed 103 points in that span, averaging 17.2 points.
Overall, Burton’s 15.9 ppg leads all ACC freshmen and ranks third nationally. He is currently the only freshman in the country averaging over 15 points, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
Burton and the rest of the Irish return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 9 p.m. ET, when they host NC State.
