CHARLOTTE – For the third time this season, Notre Dame guard Markus Burton has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Rookie of the Week. His three Rookie of the Week honors have now tied Blake Wesley for the most in the program’s history of being in the league. Burton averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 road week for the Irish.
The Mishawaka, Indiana, native turned it on in the second half of both games. In the win at Louisville, he tallied 10 of his 16 points after halftime. At Syracuse, he scored 20 of his game-high 28 points after the break as Notre Dame rallied down 29 points and had a shot to tie in the final minute. Burton finished with 28 points – one shy of his season high – as well as a season-high tying eight assists.
Burton continues to make his case for the ACC Rookie of the Year award and why not him? He leads all ACC rookies in scoring with his 16.7 points per game, with the next highest being Duke’s Jared McCain at 13.6. All-in-all he ranks 1st amongst ACC rookies in scoring, 1st in steals per game (2.0) and 2nd in assists per game (4.3).
And how about this stat – Burton could become the first player in program history to average at least 16.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a single season. Burton is currently averaging 16.7 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0 steals.
