NOTRE DAME, Indiana — Following a successful season both on and off the court, Notre Dame Men’s Tennis’ Richard Ciamarra earned ITA All-American honors as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.
The 2020 ITA Division I Men’s All-Americans were named after a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty singles players and 10 doubles pairs from across the country were awarded the prestigious honor.
The ITA awarded All-American status based on the unpublished, double run of the Oracle ITA Singles and Doubles Rankings. Twenty singles players and ten doubles teams received this honor.
“Richie has turned in one of the most impressive individual seasons in our program’s history,” assistant coach Greg Andrews said. “He has solidified himself as an elite competitor, and we could not be more proud of the growth that he has made as both a player and a person. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been on the road with Richie as he began his climb this fall. He was the embodiment of the ND Grit mentality that our program fosters, and no one is more deserving of the All-American honor.”
The junior from Southington, CT, was the No. 8 singles player in the country in the final rankings before the global pandemic cut the season short. Ciamarra went 20-8 on the season, including an impressive 12 wins against ranked opponents.
Ciamarra reached a high ranking of No. 5 nationally this year and was a finalist at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, consolation finalist at the All-American Championships, and a semifinalist at the ITA Fall National Championships.
At the ITA National Fall Championships this season, Ciamarra earned a win over the No. 4 singles player in the country, UCLA’s Keegan Smith, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. In his final four matches of the season, he earned three ranked victories, including over opponents from Michigan, Lousiville, and Northwestern.
