NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their stellar start to the season at the Joe Piane Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana Friday afternoon with both teams finishing in the top-five for the first time since 2012. The women finished fourth overall behind top-10 performances from Anna Rohrer (3rd, 16:35.9) and Jacqueline Gaughan (9th, 17:03.6). The men finished third, with two Irish runners claiming spots in the top 15. Yared Nuguse crossed the line in 24:11.08 to earn 12th place, and Tyler Keslin finished in 24:20.52 for 15th place.
Strong performances by Rohrer and Gaughan set the pace for Irish teammates Rachel Dadamio (17:08.9), Sydney Foreman (17:40.5), and Claudia Magnussen (17:49.9). In the final home race of her career, Dadamio set a personal best 5K time, placing her 13th overall. Florida State just narrowly edged out the Irish in a tiebreaker for third, placing Notre Dame in fourth.
“I am very proud of our girls’ efforts today,” Assistant Coach Kendra Foley said. “We had some adversity’s leading up to the race, but the team rose to the occasion and performed well. We are training with November in mind and this was a great step forward for many girls. It was great to get Anna Rohrer back on the course and finish in the top-three.”
With 142 total participants, Nuguse and Keslin led the way for Notre Dame’s men in the blue division five mile, while Kevin Salvano (24:30.74), Andrew Alexander (24:41), and Anthony Williams (24:42) rounded out the top five. The Irish scored 119 points overall to claim third place in team scoring, just behind Wyoming’s 105.
“The men had a great day today, as this is as high of a place as we have been at this meet in a long time,” Assistant Coach Sean Carlson said of the men’s performance. “Tony Williams had a great day. Last week he was our number one guy but fell at the start of the race today and went from last to 37th.”
In the open division, Anna Fischer finished first for the Irish and ninth overall with a 5K time of 18:02.17. Erin Sullivan, MaryClare Leonard, Olivia Niziolek and Katie Rose Blachowicz rounded out the open division top-20 for the Irish. Madison Ronzone, Kelly Koehnen, Madelyn Vanblunk and Brooke Trossen all competed in the open 5K as well.
Bradley Wattleworth finished 13th overall in the open division five-mile race and first for the Irish. He was followed shortly behind by Brendan Fraser who finished 22nd overall. Kyle Fulk also competed in the open race for Notre Dame.
“These guys are really coming together and becoming a team, I’m excited to see where that puts us over the next 6-8 weeks,” Carlson finished.
