Cross Country's Luke Watson Wins NCAA Great Lakes Regional Individual Title

The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s cross country teams competed for a spot in the NCAA championship meet at the 2000 Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championship in Ypsilanti, Mich., today. The 20th-ranked men took third place, making a strong case for an at-large bid to the NCAA championship scheduled for Nov. 20, in Ames, Iowa. The women finished in eighth place.

Junior Irish harrier Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.) claimed his fourth individual title of the season by taking first in the men’s race in 30:47.1. He also earned an automatic invitation to race in the NCAA championship meet.

Classmate Marc Striowski (Toronto, Ontario) was the next Notre Dame runner across the finish line in eighth place (31:23.0), followed by junior Patrick Conway (17th, 31:44.7), freshman Todd Mobley (24th, 31:54.2), and junior Sean Zanderson (93rd, 33:31.0).

On the women’s side, sophomore Jennifer Handley (Barrie, Ontario) was the top finisher in 19th place (21:47.3), followed by senior Chrissy Kuenster (Wheaton, Ill.) in 29th place.
