Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame senior goalkeeper Erin Goodman (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) has been named the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division I women’s lacrosse player of the week for her play last weekend in the 2009 BIG EAST Championship held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
The talented goalkeeper made a total of 16 saves in wins over Syracuse and Georgetown to lead Notre Dame to its first-ever BIG EAST championship. The championship also gives the Irish the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in May.
On Friday, April 24, Goodman made seven saves as Notre Dame defeated Syracuse by a 16-10 score. The senior, along with her defense, held the high-scoring Orange attack to just two goals in the second half, stopping four of six Syracuse shots on goal in guiding the Irish to the win.
In the BIG EAST title game, Goodman made nine saves, including six in the first half while Notre Dame was building a 9-2 lead at halftime against Georgetown. In the second half, the Hoyas rallied to cut the lead to 12-10 with just over seven minutes left in the game. Again the senior goalkeeper stood tall, making a game-saving stop on Georgetown’s Molly Ford with just over four minutes left. From there, the Irish were able to control the ball and run out the clock for the championship.
For her play on the weekend, the former Lakeland Panas High School standout was named to the BIG EAST all-tournament team and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.
On the season, Goodman is now 14-4 on the year with a 10.83 goals-against average and a .442 save percentage. Over the last three seasons, she has started 54 consecutive games and has a 37-17 (.685 winning percentage) record.
Goodman and her teammates close out the 2009 regular season on Saturday, May 2 when the Irish travel to Cornell to face the Big Red in a 12:00 noon contest at Ithaca, N.Y. The Irish are now 14-4 on the year while Cornell comes into the week with a 9-6 record.
