AMHERST, Mass. — Jake Evans scored twice and Cal Petersen stopped all 22 shots he faced to help lead Notre Dame to a 3-0 win at Massachusetts on Saturday night at the Mullins Center (3,039).
Andrew Oglevie also scored for the Irish, who improved to 8-6-2 (4-3-1 HEA) with the win, while Massachusetts moved to 4-8-2 (2-6-1 HEA).
Petersen’s 22 saves included four big saves when the Irish killed off overlapping penalties in the first period, including 35 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage. Petersen’s shutout was his second of the season and the seventh of his career.
The Irish finished 0-for-2 on the power play, but also held Massachusetts to a 0-for-5 mark on the power play.
In net, Ryan Wischow made 33 saves for the Minutemen as Notre Dame outshot UMass 36-22.
COACH JACKSON’S THOUGHTS
On what was better about tonight’s game …
“I thought we put in a better effort tonight. After last night when we lost a lot of races and battles, I thought we were better in those areas tonight, which we have to be if we’re going to be a good team.”
On scoring first …
“The first goal is really important in any hockey game and something we have had a difficult time doing. We tried to put a little more emphasis on it, we’ve been a pretty good second period team and a good third period team so it is important to get off to better starts and not put ourselves in a hole.”
On Cal Petersen’s play …
“The shutout was good for Cal.He had a tough night last night. Last year he played the whole season and saved his best for the second half of the year so I have full confidence he’s going to have a great second half. But we have one more game here in the first semester to focus on [against Boston College] and he’ll have to focus real well for that one.”
NOTRE DAME SCORING
1-0 | Andrew Oglevie gave the Irish a 1-0 lead at 19:18 of the first period when he battled to get to a rebound in front and hammered it low past Ryan Wischow for his seventh goal of the season. Dennis Gilbert took the original shot from the point, while Anders Bjork also earned an assist on the play.
2-0 | Jake Evans fired a slap shot high past Wischow for his fourth goal of the season at 4:01 of the second period. Tony Bretzman started the play by putting a shot on goal and then Cam Morrison kept the play alive in front before Evans got to the puck to Wischow’s left.
3-0 | Evans then capped the scoring with an empty net goal at 19:43 of the third. Cal Burke and Joe Wegwerth held the puck in the corner before eventually working it out to Evans in the slot.

The Fighting Irish will return home and play host to No. 3/4 Boston College at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Compton Family Ice Arena. The game will be televised by NBCSN.

- Junior goaltender Cal Petersen made his 66th-consecutive start in the Notre Dame net.
- Jordan Gross skated in his 95th-consecutive game, dating back to the first game of his freshman season.

- Skating in his fourth game of the season, Tony Bretzman notched an assist for his first point of the season.
