MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis program wrapped up fall play Sunday with another successful day at the Gopher Invitational at the University of Minnesota.
The Irish went 4-2 in doubles matches and 5-7 in singles, including 4-4 in the higher Gold Flight. Sophomore Alex Lebedev and freshman Matt Gamble defeated Boise State’s Harvey Shackleton and Ryland McDermott in doubles, then Lebedev defeated Shackleton 6-4, 6-4 in singles and Gamble defeated McDermott by retirement.
Freshman Johnathan Small also won in singles and doubles, defeating Dartmouth Diego Pedraza 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in singles and combining with Guillermo Cabrera to upend Pedraza and Max Schmidt 6-3. Sophomore Daniel Rayl was likewise victories in both formats, defeating Minnesota’s Eli Ogilvy 6-1, 6-4 and teaming up with junior Brendon Kempin to down Ogilvy and Marino Alpeza 7-5.
In the Maroon Flight, Drew Dawson and Conor Somers beat Minnesota’s Josip Krstanovic and George Lovitt 7-6(6) and Somers defeated Boise State’s Greg Wischer 5-7, 7-4, 10-3.
The Irish will return to action in January when they commence their spring dual schedule. The Irish will welcome Ball State to the Eck Tennis Pavilion at 3:30 p.m. ET on January 20.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned her master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University in 2013.
