Notre Dame vs Chaminade Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The senior duo of Matt Farrell and Bonzie Colson put on a clinic on Monday, as Notre Dame (4-0) won its first-round matchup in the Maui Invitational, defeating Chaminade (2-1) by a final score of 83-56. Farrell scored a career-high 27 points while Colson added 23 to combine for 50 points.
With the victory the Irish advance to the semifinal round of the tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Notre Dame will play the winner of Michigan and LSU at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish took a nine-point lead into the halftime break at 38-29 against the Silverswords. Notre Dame led by as many as 14 with a minute to play but the hosts ended the frame by scoring the last five points, including a running three-pointer at the buzzer to cut Notre Dame’s lead to single digits. Farrell and Colson did most of the heavy lifting for the Irish on the offensive end in the first frame, as the two players combined to score 27 points.
The Silverswords knocked down a three to cut the Irish lead to six to open the second stanza but Notre Dame abruptly answered by scoring nine of the next 11 points to push its lead back to 13 at 47-34. Midway through the second half, the Irish blew the game wide open, going on a 12-0 run to take a 25-point lead at 65-40 with nine minutes to play. Notre Dame went on to win by a final of 83-56.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Farrell had the best offensive night of his four-year career on Monday, pouring in a career-high 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting. The senior was effective around the rim and behind the arc, knocking down 4-of-7 shots from distance. Farrell also added four assists and one steal in the victory.
NOTRE DAME STAT OF THE GAME
Not only did Farrell and Colson combine to score 50 points but the two senior standouts missed just a combined six shots along the way. Farrell finished 9-of-12 from the field and Colson shot 8-of-11 from the floor. The duo also knocked down 11-of-13 free throws and 5-of-8 three-point attempts.
NOTES OF THE GAME
- Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey now has 386 victories as Notre Dame’s head coach and is just eight shy of passing Digger Phelps as the outright all-time program record holder.
- The Irish are now 2-0 against Chaminade in the all-time series.
- Notre Dame improves to 52-35 when playing in-season tournament games and have won six straight.
- With Colson and Farrell each finishing above the 20-point threshold, the Irish had two 20+ point scorers in the same game for the first time since Farrell and Steve Vasturia did so against Louisville last season on Jan. 14, 2017.
- Colson has finished with 20+ points twice in his senior campaign and now has 16 such performances in his career.
- With three blocks, Colson has logged 11 blocked shots in his last three games.
