NOTRE DAME, Ind. – United States Olympic team diver David Boudia reset his own Rolfs Aquatic Center records in the 1- and 3-meter events Saturday afternoon while vaulting Purdue to a 173-127 win over the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team.
Boudia, who held the previous facility records from a pair of efforts when the Boilermakers visited Notre Dame in 2008, posted 473.47 points off the 3-meter board with a 394.95 in the 1-meter version for the individual sweep.
Notre Dame (2-2) won five individual races on the day. Frank Dyer (200 free), Christopher Johnson (100 breast), Christopher Wills (200 back), Joshua Choi (200 breast) and Michael Sullivan (400 individual medley) each posted gold-medal finishes.
“This was a fun meet, and each of the races were excellent on both sides,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said. “From start to finish across the board, the races were very close. This is the way college swimming is supposed to be. Congratulations to Purdue on their performances in the winning effort.
“We’re still improving and getting better as the season progresses. Our team showed flashes of brilliance in every single event. This was a meet that built our spirit because of the way we raced, and things are getting much better for this program. The coaches see it, and our men see it.”

400 Medley Relay: Purdue raced out to the early lead after the backstroke leg … Chuck Destro had the best split with a 50.54 … Johnson and Joseph Raycroft evened up with the other two Purdue relays to touch the wall after the breaststroke leg within a half second of the other squads … Bill Bass and Daniel Michael pulled away from the field on the fly … Purdue’s Matt Friede edged ahead on the final freestyle leg to earn the win … their winning time was 3:22.41 … the Irish finished just behind with a 3:22.73.
1,650 Freestyle: A trio of Purdue swimmers pulled ahead by the 500-yard mark … Purdue’s Matt Stewart went ahead of his teammates at the 1,000-yard mark … Stewart hits the wall first in a 15:34.57 … the Boilermakers swept the top three spots with Drew Wolfred (15:41.32) and Vinny Donnelly (15:49.27) following suit … the top Irish finisher was Colin Babcock (16:10.67), who took fifth.
200 Freestyle: Frank Dyer took the early lead in the first half of the race … Purdue’s Wachtel began to chase him down but could not catch the stallion, as Dyer won in 1:39.19 … Wachtel took second in 1:39.53.
100 Backstroke: Purdue’s Chuck Destro lunged to the wall to out-touch Petar Petrovic (50.96 to 51.18) … Wills took third with a 51.20.
100 Breaststroke: Johnson bolted to a quick time of 57.08 to take first-place honors … Mason Weber took second for the Irish (57.99) … Purdue’s Albert Miller rounded out the top three in 58.19.
200 Butterfly: Purdue’s Eduard Galdeano owned a slight lead over Bass at the 100-yard mark … Galdeano held on to win in 1:50.18 … Bass came in second (1:52.18), followed closely by Tylor Gauger (1:52.43).
50 Freestyle: Purdue took first, second and third as Wachtel (20.72), Ben Ziolkowski (20.83), and Friede (20.89) hit the wall … Kevin Overholt was the fastest Irish swimmer (21.12).
1-meter Diving: Boudia reset his own pool record with a gold-medal worthy victory (394.95) … Purdue’s Danny Cox took second (312.22) … Wes Villaflor took home the bronze (304.42).
100 Freestyle: Purdue’s Wachtel hit first in 45.80 just ahead of Joshua Nosal (45.87) … Purdue’s Destro took third in 45.95.
200 Backstroke: Wills edged out Sullivan (1:51.03 to 1:51.49) for first place … Bertie Nel (1:51.79) rounded out the top three for the Irish sweep.
200 Breaststroke: Choi touched first in 2:04.65 … Raycroft secured second (2:06.22) … Purdue’s Scott Dean earned third in 2:07.35.
500 Freestyle: Dyer showed some range, leading the field at the halfway mark … Purdue’s Wolfred pulled ahead and took first (4:31.60) … Dyer finished just behind (4:32.43) … Purdue’s Alec La Mothe rounded out the top three (4:32.93).
100 Butterfly: Purdue took the top two spots … Brendan Joyce (49.83) hit the wall first … Jordan Berry finished in 51.75 to take third.
3-meter Diving: Boudia took first with his pool record of 473.47 points … Villaflor took second with 341.25 points … J.P. Perez of Purdue rounded out the top three with 332.78 points.
400 Individual Medley: Sullivan was two body lengths ahead of the field going into the breaststroke leg … Sullivan held on for the win while breaking the four-minute barrier (3:59.78).
200 Freestyle Relay: The final was highlighted by a sterling 19.92 split by Destro … Purdue won in 1:21.70 … Notre Dame finished in 1:23.89.
