The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team shifted its focus to singles play on Saturday, posting 13 wins on the third day of the 16th annual Tom Fallon Invitational at the Courtney Tennis Center. Five Notre Dame players, including two who entered the tournament without a career singles victory, turned in perfect 2-0 marks on a day in which the Irish played only singles contests. The Tom Fallon Invitational concludes on Sunday, with Notre Dame taking on players from Northwestern and Indiana State in singles at 10:00 a.m. and then playing doubles matches afterwards.
A trio of Irish players have tasted their first collegiate singles success at this year’s Tom Fallon. Senior T Moss (Hilton Head Island, S.C.), junior Michael Smith (Encino, Calif.) and sophomore Peter Graham (Luxembourg) each entered the tournament looking for their first career singles triumph and each has been rewarded, with Graham and Moss going 2-0 on Saturday and Smith splitting a pair of decisions. Graham, who gained his first career victory on Thursday, defeated Purdue’s Sounak Chatterjee 6-1, 6-2 and then downed Vineeth Gossain of Michigan 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). Moss was especially dominant, defeating William & Mary’s Kal Patrick 6-3, 6-2 before topping Greg Chambers of Maryland 6-0, 6-0. Smith, playing in his first collegiate singles match, was triumphant against Maryland’s Scott Baxter 6-2, 6-1.
Some Irish veterans also played well on Saturday, led by sophomore Brent D’Amico (Castle Rock, Colo.) and junior Luis Haddock (Caguas, Puerto Rico), who each were perfect in two matches. D’Amico gained a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carl McCafferty of Purdue before defeating Michigan’s Josef Fischer 6-1, 6-2. Haddock posted his second upset in as many matches against players ranked in the top 75 in the nation by defeating Purdue’s 72nd-ranked Scott Mayer 6-3, 7-5. In last weekend’s Homewood Suites Fall Tribe Classic, Haddock knocked off #51 Aleksey Zharinov of Minnesota. In his second match on Saturday, the Irish tri-captain handled Michigan’s Michael Rubin 6-1, 6-1. Haddock is 6-1 this fall in singles play and is 11-2 overall (singles and doubles combined).
Freshman Eric Langenkamp (Scarsdale, N.Y.) continued his hot play, also gaining two singles wins. He defeated Colin Foster of Purdue 6-3, 6-3 and then went on to beat Michigan’s Brett Baudinet 6-2, 6-2. Langenkamp is 6-1 in singles in his first collegiate fall, as is his classmate Patrick Buchanan (Fullerton, Calif.), who beat Purdue’s Paul Rose 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday to improve to 8-0 in overall collegiate action before dropping a contest in a match tiebreaker later in the day.
Senior Jake Cram (Littleton, Colo.) won his only match on Saturday, topping David Reichsfeld of Maryland 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). The win was the second singles triumph of his career and it moved his overall record this fall to 7-1.
Two players with local ties have played well at the Tom Fallon Invitational, as well. Purdue’s Troy Havens, a South Bend native and Penn High School graduate,was 3-0 in doubles action on Friday and then split a pair of singles matches on Saturday, including a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Notre Dame’s Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico). Granger native and St. Joseph’s High School graduate Chris Varga of Ball State has managed a pair of wins thus far in the tournament.
The Tom Fallon Invitational is a tournament featuring 11 teams competing in a “hidden dual” format, where teams simulate dual matches, but no team scores are recorded. Of this year’s field, seven teams finished in the national top 50 a year ago and eight of the 11 squads earned invitations to the 2002 NCAA Championship.
The event, which was known as the Irish Invitational until the name was changed in 1988, honors Notre Dame coaching legend Tom Fallon, who coached the Irish for 31 years from 1957-87. Fallon, a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame, amassed a career record of 511-200 (.719) and helped Notre Dame to a share of the 1959 national championship.
