ATHENS, Ga. – Notre Dame men’s tennis seniors Niall Fitzgerald and Casey Watt gave the No. 4 seed team of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford all they wanted and more, but the highly-seeded duo prevailed in two sets, 6-4, 7-6, in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Thursday evening at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
“Niall and Casey played well and competed hard tonight,” said Notre Dame associate head coach Ryan Sachire. “Klahn and Thacher are a great team and our guys battled with them in both sets. It was a tough one for them to lose.”
The Cardinal squad advances to Friday’s round of 16, while the Irish duo close out their careers in the Notre Dame blue and gold. Fitzgerald and Watt both graduated from Notre Dame on Sunday and helped the Irish to a 21-9 record this season.
