March 26, 2000

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s track and field team kicked off their 2000 outdoor season on a high note, breaking five school records and having one runner, senior Alison Klemmer (Troy, Mich.), provisionally qualify for the 2000 NCAA championships.

Klemmer, a two-time All-American, ran her provisional qualifying mark in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational Sunday in Stanford, Calif. Klemmer’s time of 34:30.16 was good enough for an 11th-place finish in the elite college field.

At the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., four Notre Dame field event records fell. Freshman multi-event performer Jamie Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.) broke two records in her first career outdoor meet in the pole vault and triple jump. Volkmer finished seventh in both events with a leap of 38-2 1/4 in the triple jump and cleared 11-3 3/4 in the pole vault.

Another freshman Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.) broke Alison Howard’s 1996 record of 18-10 in the long jump by posting a leap of 20-1 en route to a second-place finish. Sophomore Dore DeBartolo (Aurora, Ill.) extended her own school record and personal best in the hammer, placing third with a throw of 181-11.

At the Purdue Open in West Lafayette, Ind., freshman Andre Duplechain (Port Barre, La.) broke a three-year-old school record in the javelin in her first collegiate meet with a mark of 117-7.

The Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field squads play host to their first and only outdoor meet of the year, when Miami University, Butler and Western Michigan travel to Monogram Track on Saturday, April 1.
