NOTRE DAME, Indiana – Freddy Canteen will attend graduate school at the University of Notre Dame and play football for Fighting Irish this fall, head coach Brian Kelly announced today.
Canteen will graduate with a degree in English from the University of Michigan this April and will join the Notre Dame program in June. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
“Freddy will bring some speed and athleticism to our wide receiver group,” said Kelly. “We’re excited to get him on campus with our coaching staff and players in preparation for the 2017 season. Freddy is a committed, focused and determined individual, both on and off the field, and our receivers and offense will benefit greatly from his addition.”
“I’m truly honored and humbled for this incredible opportunity,” said Canteen. “I’m very thankful to Coach Kelly and his staff for believing in me. I’m excited to start this new chapter in my life and can’t wait to get going with my new teammates.”
Canteen played in 16 career games for the Wolverines at wide receiver during the 2014 and `15 seasons. He caught six career passes for 22 yards and one touchdown. Canteen was limited to just five games as a sophomore in 2015 and did not see any action for Michigan in 2016 due to injury.
As a freshman in `14, Canteen quickly made an impact for Michigan as one of the fastest players on the team. He appeared in 11 games and started against Northwestern (Nov. 8) and Ohio State (Nov. 29). Canteen caught a three-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter against the Buckeyes.
Canteen was a four-star prospect coming out of Eastern Christian High School in Elkton, Maryland. He was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 298 overall player and the No. 41 wide receiver in the country. As a senior at Eastern Christian in 2013, Canteen played against current Irish players’ Brandon Wimbush (St. Peter’s Prep), Jimmy Byrne, (St. Ignatius), Liam Eichenberg (St. Ignatius) and Shaun Crawford (St. Edward).
