Greg Martin Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

Sept. 3, 2001

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame defender Greg Martin (Plano, Texas) has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. The Irish sophomore earns the award for the first time in his career after playing a key role in Notre Dame’s 5-0 win over Villanova in the season opener on Sept. 1.

Martin, who started in the backfield, helped limit the Wildcats to just four shots in the game. In addition, he recorded the first points of his career with a goal and an assist in the contest. Martin scored Notre Dame’s second goal of the game at the 56:25 mark for his first career goal and then dished off his first collegiate assist on teammate Matt Rosso’s goal with 12 minutes left in the contest.

Martin is the first sophomore in school history to serve as a team captain. As a freshman, he started in 16 of Notre Dame’s 17 games.
