NOTRE DAME. Ind. – Senior tri-captains Luis Haddock (Caguas, P.R./Notre Dame H.S.) and Matthew Scott (Oakton, Va./International School of Paris) opened play in the adidas Invitational with a doubles victory Thursday night at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The pair, seeded second in the doubles draw, defeated a Louisville team 8-5 in first-round action.
Haddock and Scott improved to 7-2 in their careers as a doubles team by topping the Cardinal pair of Damar Johnson and Octavian Nicodim. The Irish pair got an early service break, but Louisville broke back to put the match on-serve. Leading 6-5, Notre Dame got another break, and Haddock held serve to clinch the match.
“It was a good first-round win,” said Irish assistant coach Todd Doebler of the triumph. “That Louisville pair is a good team. Beating them was a good way to start.”
Haddock, Scott and freshman Barry King (Dublin, Ireland/Gonzaga College) will open play in the singles draw on Friday. King, who missed the season-opening Rice Crowne Plaza Invitational with tendinitis in his wrist, will make his collegiate debut in an 8 a.m. (EDT) match against Arizona State’s Jonathan Stott. Haddock, ranked 64th in the nation, and Scott, who upset a pair of top-60 players in the first tournament of the season, earned byes into the second round of the tournament. King will play two matches on Friday, while both Haddock and Scott will play one in singles and one in doubles.
