Hinrichs and Lehman Finish First at Winrow-Valparaiso Open

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Notre Dame cross country team opened the 2023 season on the road as they competed in the 34th Annual Winrow Valparaiso Open on Friday, September 1. The women started off the year with a first place finish as the men’s team took home second.

WOMEN’S RECAP

The women competed against Valparaiso, Goshen, Western Michigan, Purdue, and Grace in the 5K. Sophomore Caroline Lehman led the Irish with a first place finish, the first in her career, as she recorded a final time of 17:51.9. She was followed by teammate Molly Grant who ran an 18:11.5, placing second overall. Caroline Lehman, Molly Grant, Claire Sievern, Paige Grant, Elizabeth Schmidt, and Charlotte Bednar each recorded personal records in the event.

MEN’S RECAP

It was a big day for the men’s team as all five runners on the men’s team recorded PR’s in the event. The men were able to record two top-five finishes in the 6K as Gabe Hinrichs led the Irish, claiming a first place finish for the first time in his Notre Dame cross country career. John Schuler wasn’t far behind as Schuler finished third with a time of 18:10.8. Both PR’s were followed by another personal best from Luke Schildmeyer as well, who’s previous best time was an 18:44.2 in the 6K of last year’s Winrow Valparaiso Open.
