Holden, Reaney Win Individual Titles; Irish Claim Second Overall

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team racked up two more individual titles on day four of the 2013 BIG EAST Championships to wrap up second place and conclude a successful conference meet that saw the Irish win 10 events (three relay, seven individual), earn 35 all-BIG EAST scrolls by 12 student-athletes in 17 events, set four meet records and six school records.

The second place showing was the third in a row for the Irish, who have finished in the top three in the BIG EAST all 18 seasons they have been in the league, including 14 titles.

Notre Dame finished up with 772 points, which is 178.50 points more than it scored last season (593.50) to finish second behind league champion Louisville (895 points).

In the individual awards section of the post-meet awards ceremony the Irish cleaned up. Head diving coach Caiming Xie was named BIG EAST Women’s Diving Coach of the Year, head coach Brian Barnes secured BIG EAST Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year, senior Jenny Chiang was honored as women’s Most Outstanding Diver and sophomore Emma Reaney was tabbed women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.

“This team worked their tail off this week,” said Barnes. “The amount of energy that went into their preparation for events was unbelievable and it made for a fun week.

“Emma definitely deserved to be named most outstanding swimmer,” said Barnes. “It’s not often you see someone break two individual meet records and swim two NCAA A cuts. She even had the fastest 200 free of the week in the conference in her leg of the 800 free relay. She works so hard and it is just special to see her get rewarded.”

The meet proved to be a dandy for several student-athletes including standouts Reaney, Kim Holden and Kelly Ryan.

Reaney won six events (three relays, three individual) and earned all-BIG EAST honors in all seven events she competed in. The Lawrence, Kan., native was a part of three BIG EAST and four school records and reached three NCAA “A” cut and four NCAA “B” cut standards.

Holden completed her remarkable comeback from double shoulder surgery in 2011 to win three events (two relay, one individual) and place second in four others to earn seven all-BIG EAST scrolls. Holden finishes her career with 11 titles, good for a tie for fourth in school history, and 22 all-BIG EAST awards, which is good for fourth in school history.

Ryan earned three titles (two relays, one individual) and three second place finishes as she was named all-BIG EAST six times.

Freshman Catherin Galletti earned four all-BIG EAST awards as a member of four relay teams, while divers Allison Casareto and Jenny Chiang each won an event and earned two all-BIG EAST scrolls.

The Irish divers get back to action in two weeks as they head to West Lafayette, Ind., for the NCAA Zone Diving meet where they will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships are slated for March 21-23 in Indianapolis at the IUPUI Natatorium.

The Irish closed out the meet with a second place finish in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:19.37. The team of Reaney, Ryan, Galletti and Holden received all-BIG EAST honors for their achievement.

Reaney claimed her third individual win of the week by winning the 200 breast title by over three seconds in an NCAA “A” cut time of 2:08.24. In doing so she secured the only individual championship she failed to win as a freshman in 2012. She took second a year ago to Louisville’s Gisselle Kohoyda, who took third this season (2:12.10).

Reaney becomes only the fourth Irish standout to win three individual events at one BIG EAST meet, joining Katie Carroll (2004), Carrie Nixon (2000) and Linda Gallo (1998).

Joining Reaney in the 200 breast were Lauren Stauder (9^th-2:13.93), Christen McDonough (10^th-2:15.74) and Genevieve Bradford (13^th-2:19.67). Stauder’s and McDonough’s times were both NCAA “B” cut marks.

Ryan and Holden went one and two in the 200 back to sweep the backstroke events for the meet. Ryan turned in a meet record and NCAA “B” cut time of 1:53.86 to just edge fellow tri-captain Holden, who also broke the meet record in an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:54.33. Ryan has now won the 200 back twice, matching Holden’s feat from 2010-11.

Casey took second in the 200 fly in a school record and NCAA “B” cut time of 1:57.49, breaking Katie Casey’s record of 1:57.72 from Feb. 21, 2009.

Also swimming in the 200 finals were Courtney Whyte (6^th-2:00.50) and Melissa Scott (7^th-2:00.74).

Just 15 minutes after her 200 back swim, Ryan turned around and took fifth in the 100 free in an NCAA “B” cut time of 49.88 in a fast field that featured Louisville freshman standout Kelsi Worrell, who won the event in 49.02.

Freshman Lindsey Streepey earned all-BIG EAST honors after placing third on the platform with 228.40 points. Joining Streepey in the finals were fellow freshman Emma Gaboury (6^th-186.15 points) and sophomore Allison Casareto (7^th-185.15).

Streepey and Gaboury closed out a strong first BIG EAST meet for the freshmen duo as both advanced to the finals in all three diving disciplines.

In the consolation finals of the platform dive, Jenny Chiang took second to finish 10^th overall with 188.00 points.

Casareto and Chiang concluded an impressive BIG EAST meet for the all-BIG EAST duo. Both divers won a discipline, earned two all-BIG EAST scrolls and placed in the top 10 in all three events.

“It was definitely exciting (winning the 3-meter for the fourth time),” said Chiang. “It’s been a long journey and the fact that I know I made history is a great feeling. Since my freshman year the level of competition has definitely picked up so it’s fun to compete against a lot of really great divers and to see everyone performing at their best.”

“Winning the 1-meter was really fun because everyone really wanted it,” said Casareto. “There were some really great competitors out there and when we are all together it really brings out the best in us.”

Gracie Fredlake closed out her BIG EAST career with a sixth place showing (16:42.12) in the 1,650 free, while fellow senior Jaime Malandra took 16^th in 17:11.30.
