Bowling Green, Ohio – For the second night in a row, Notre Dame took a lead into the third period and couldn’t hold it as Bowling Green got the lone goal of the third period to tie the game, 1-1, to force overtime. The game ended in the 1-1 tie with the Falcons getting the extra point in the standings by winning the shootout, 2-1, in front of 2,746 Saturday evening at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Freshman Kyle Palmieri had the lone goal for Notre Dame in the second period with Bowling Green getting the tying goal from Tomas Petruska at 9:41 of the third period.
In the shootout, Palmieri and Ryan Thang missed on their shots on Falcon goaltender Nick Eno while Dan Kissel scored on his. Bowling Green’s David Solway was stopped on his attempt before James Perkin and Petruska beat Irish goaltender Mike Johnson with backhanders to get the 2-1 advantage and the extra point in the CCHA standings.
The loss extends Notre Dame’s winless streak to four games (0-3-1) and the Irish are now 12-14-8 overall and 8-11-7-2 in conference play, good for 33 points in the standings. The Falcons improve to 5-22-5 overall and are 4-17-5-4 in the conference. Notre Dame is now 2-5 in CCHA shootouts this season and have lost four straight. Overall, the Irish are 3-5 in the shootout with the extra win coming versus North Dakota in the Shillelagh Tournament.
Notre Dame out shot Bowling Green, 39-28, in the game. Eno finished with 38 saves while Johnson had 27 stops in regulation and overtime.
The Irish dominated play in the first two periods as they had a 31-10 shot advantage in the first 40 minutes, but only had Palmieri’s goal to show for it.
The Falcons almost scored with just over five minutes left in the opening period as Solway’s shot from the slot broke through Mike Johnson and rolled toward the goal line where it almost crossed the goal line before Johnson covered it with his glove. Referee Brent Gawlik immediately waved no goal and after a 6-7 minute delay while the goal was reviewed, gave the official no goal call.
Notre Dame scored the lone goal of the second period and it came just 31 seconds into the stanza off the stick of Palmieri after he broke his stick, was able to get to the bench and get another before getting back in the play.
With play along the Falcons’ goal line, Palmieri’s stick broke and he headed to the bench where teammate Ryan Guentzel gave him his stick. The Irish controlled the play with Teddy Ruth keeping the puck in the zone along the right boards. He moved it to the right wing corner to Calle Ridderwall who fed it in the slot to a late-arriving Palmieri. The freshman right wing one-timed a shot with Guentzel’s stick over Eno’s stick hand and into the left corner for his eighth goal of the season.
In the final period, Bowling Green took the play to the Irish, taking a 15-6 advantage in shots. The Falcons scored the equalizer at 9:41 when they converted a Notre Dame turnover behind the net. Perkin forced the play to the right of Johnson and pushed the puck in front where Petruska lifted it over the Irish netminder for his ninth goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1.
In overtime, Bowling Green out shot the Irish, 3-2, but the game remained tied after 65 minutes of action to set up the Falcons shootout victory.
Notre Dame closes out the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against Michigan. The Irish travel to Ann Arbor on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7:35 p.m. The teams then return to South Bend to face off at the Joyce Center on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7:05 p.m. The Irish will celebrate Senior Night that night.
