Irish Begin Indoor Season with Strong Showing

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame track & field program opened their indoor season hosting the Blue & Gold Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center on Friday night.

Hosting Bethel, Butler, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Grace, Marquette, Notre Dame, Toledo, Valparaiso, the Irish claimed victories in 7 events including the women’s long jump, women’s pole vault, women’s shot put, men’s and women’s 800 meter, and the men’s and women’s weight throw.

Rachel Tanczos took first in the women’s weight throw, tossing a 21.52m and teammate Michael Shoaf took first in the men’s competition with a mark of 19.24m. Tanczos took first in the shot put as well with a mark of 15.34m.

Also notable was the men’s and women’s 800 as Notre Dame took first through fourth in the men’s race and first through fifth in the women’s race. Bashir Mosavello clocked in at 1:48.52 to take first while teammates Samuel Voelz crossed the finish line at 1:48.82, Tim Zepf at 1:49.18 and Vincent Zona at 1:50.63. The women finished the race with Megan Hughes leading the group and taking first place at 2:16.60, followed by Paige Grant at 2:17.71, Catherine Coffey at 2:18.25, Molly Grant at 2:18.71 and Sarah Mirkin at 2:20.95.

Other wins for the Irish were Sophie Novak taking the win in the mile with a time of 5:08.19, and the women’s 4×400 relay team consisting of Eve Balseiro, Madison Schmidt, Kaitlin Ryan, and Jadin O’Brien with a time of 3:49.93.

The Irish travel for their next competition to the Big Ten Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 15.
