NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame put together a frantic comeback in the final minutes of Saturday’s game against Boston College but fell just short, dropping a 73-72 decision to the Eagles.
The Fighting Irish had two players score in double figures, led by T.J. Gibbs, who had 22 points and six assists. John Mooney added a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds and Juwan Durham added eight points and four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Notre Dame struggled out of the gate, falling behind 38-28 heading into halftime.
Boston College kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 70-59 advantage before Notre Dame went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Durham’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 70-67 with 1:08 to go in the contest. The Fighting Irish kept their comeback going, but Boston College managed to hold on for the 73-72 win. Notre Dame capitalized on seven Boston College turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Gibbs played his best game of the season on Saturday, scoring a season-high 22 points to pace the Irish offense. The senior shot 6-of-11 from the field, including a 3-for-6 effort from three-point range. Gibbs also led the Irish in assists with six.
NOTES
- Mooney recorded his sixth double-double in just eight games that he has played in this season, posting 16 points and 18 rebounds.
- Mooney’s 18 rebounds are a season high for the senior.
- Gibbs’ team-high 22 points mark the seventh double-digit scoring performance of the season for the senior and the 63rd of his career.
- Durham tied his season high in blocks with four on the day, marking his third four block performance of the season.
