COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Notre Dame men’s tennis team began play today in the qualifying round of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center and Racquet Club of Columbus.
The Irish got off to a tremendous start this morning, with all four competitors winning and progressing to the round of 32. In a close match, senior Michael Fredericka defeated Beckwith of Western Michigan, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Sophomore Nicolas Montoya battled for his win in a second-set tiebreaker, beating Schmerin of YSU, 6-3 7-6(6). Sophomore Eric Schnurrenberger handily defeated Tebon (WGB), 6-0, 6-3, and sophomore Kenneth Sabacinski won in his match against Western Michigan’s Phillips, 6-3, 6-4.
In an unfortunate luck of the draw, Schnurrenberger and Montoya had to play each other in the second round. Schnurrenberger defeated Montoya, 6-4, 6-1, and he will play for his chance to compete in the main draw in the final round of the qualifiers tomorrow.
Sabacinski beat John of DePaul, 6-4, 6-0. He, too, will get a shot at the main draw in his final qualifying match tomorrow. Fredericka fell to Michigan State’s Jadun, 6-3, 6-4.
Tomorrow will be a busy day for Notre Dame. The third round of the qualifiers gets underway tomorrow at 8 a.m. Later in the day, six members of the Irish squad will start in the first round of the main draw. Doubles matches will also get on the court in the evening.
