Irish Compete on Day One of Alex Wilson Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Multiple athletes set NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the first day of the Alex Wilson Invitational, held at the Loftus Sports Center.

Men’s Long Jump: Eric Quick finished fifth with a mark of 6.96m (22-10), followed by Justin Schneider in seventh at 6.46m (21-2 1/2).

Women’s Long Jump: Illinois’ Jessica Penney qualified for the NCAA Championships with a mark of 6.14m (20-1 3/4). Michigan’s Casey Taylor finished second at 5.86m (19-2 3/4) and West Virginia’s Chelsea Carrier finished third at 5.82m (19-1 1/4).

Women’s Weight Throw: Western Michigan’s Irene Cooper finished first with a mark of 20.01m (65-7 3/4), followed by Anna Weber in second at 62-10 1/2) and Mallory Barnes, of Dayton, finished third with a mar of 18.76m (61-6 3/4). All three set NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Men’s Weight Throw: Michigan State’s Jay Gillespie took the top spot with a toss of 18.58m (60-11 1/2). Greg Davis finished second with a mark of 18.26m (59-11), John Belcher finished fifth at 16.37m (53-8 1/2), Denes Veres finished seventh in 15.19m (49-10) and Andrew Hills finished eighth with a mark of 14.23m (46-8 1/4).

Women’s 5000 Meters – Wake Forest’s Anna Nosenko won the event with a time of 16:25.91. Lindsey Ferguson was the top Irish finisher in eighth at 17:04.36, followed by Beth Tacl in ninth with a time of 17:07.47. Becca Bauman finished 15th in 17:50.25, Alissa Ott finished 16th in 17:56.03, Kari Johnson was 17th with a time of 17:59.01, Stephanie Socias finished 18th in 18:00.01, Erica Watson was 19th in 18:00.17 and Emily Wauford finished 20th with a time of 18:38.49.

Men’s 5000 Meters – Auburn’s Girma Mecheso finished first with a time of 13:59.56, followed by Guor Marial, of Iowa State, at 14:04.07 and Virginia’s Ryan Collins in third at 14:05.28.

Men’s Pole Vault: Mark Hollis, jumping unattached, finished first with a jump of 5.37m (17-7 1/4). Kevin Schipper finished third at 5.07m (16-7 1/2), and Matt Schipper finished fifth with a mark of 5.07m (16-7 1/2).

Women’s High Jump: Michigan State’s Rebecca Buchholtz finished first with a mark of 1.76m (5-9 1/4), followed by Indiana’s Ashley Rhodes and Marquette’s Erynn James.

Women’s Distance Medley Relay: West Virginia took the top spot with a time of 11;05.12m, followed by Kansas State at 11:07.41. Both times were NCAA automatic qualifiers. Washington State finished third at 11:17.92 and Missouri State finished fourth at 11:24.02. Both set NCAA provisional qualifying times.

Men’s Distance Medley Relay: 15 teams set NCAA automatic qualifying times, with Virginia leading the way at 9:29.86.

Events get underway at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for the final day of the Alex Wilson Invitational.
