NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The first day of fall competition is in the books for the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team, which competed on each coast today to kick off the tournament slate.

NAPA VALLEY CLASSIC

The Irish contingent went 2-2 in group play on Friday, with sophomore Guillermo Cabrera defeating a USTA junior member in three sets and freshman Tristan McCormick upending Oklahoma freshman Stefano Tsorotiosis 7-6(4), 6-3 for his first collegiate win. In doubles, the duo teamed up to defeat California’s Bjorn Hoffman and Jack Molloy 7-5.

The Napa Valley Classic consists of three days of group play followed by a wild-card shoot-out (one 10-point tiebreaker set) on Sunday to determine the tournament’s singles winner. The winner will receive a bid to an upcoming USTA tournament.

CHOWDER FEST

The Irish went 3-5 in singles at Harvard and won one of four doubles matches on the day. Freshman Richard Ciamarra earned his first collegiate win over Wisconsin’s Chema Carranza, 6-2, 6-2. Additionally sophomore Johnathan Small defeated Martim Vilela of Wisconsin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and classmate Conor Somers also downed Badger Darius Mackenzie in three sets, 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-0.

In doubles, Ciamarra and fellow rookie William Howells defeated Vilela and Chase Colton of Wisconsin in an 8-4 pro-set decision.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs, in addition to overseeing production of the football Gameday Magazine. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University and earned her master’s degree from Georgetown University in 2013.
