NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Hopes of performing well were on the minds of the Notre Dame track and field student-athletes coming into the annual Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday. They met their expectations, posting five first-place finishes and 11 top-3 showings. Overall, both the men and women finished fourth in team competition, with the men scoring 69.5 points and the women scoring 68 points.
“I told the team, we have to get used to competing at a higher level,” Notre Dame head coach Alan Turner said. “They [Michigan, Michigan State, Louisville] stepped it up, and I told the team, it doesn’t get easier than this. In all the meets there are going to be quality people. These people competing are national qualifiers or all-conference performers, so you have to bring the effort each and every time.”
Notre Dame’s Nate Richartz won first place in the pole vault, solidifying the win with a jump of 5.30 meters. This jump was also a personal best for the junior from Island Lake, Illinois.
In the women’s 600-meter run, sophomore Jordan Shead (St. Charles, Ill.) posted a personal-best time of 1:31.29, securing a third-place finish.
Back in action for the first time this season, senior Danielle Aragon continued her road to recovery in the mile event, with a time of 4:55.27. On the men’s side, sophomores John Flannery and Billy Dolan posted times of 4:19.42 and 4:38.15, respectively, in the mile race.
In the women’s 400-meter dash, senior Margaret Bamgbose finished with a strong first-place finish in a time of 53.82. Bamgbose was followed on the men’s side by a great performance from junior Harvey Smith, whose time of 47.85 gave him third place in the event.
Senior Brent Swanberg earned a time of 8.50 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, giving him a personal-best time and a fourth-place finish.
The Fighting Irish had a strong showing in both men’s and women’s fields in the 800-meter run. On the men’s side, sophomore Kirk Hansen claimed third place by running a time of 1:53.09. On the women’s side, junior Jamie Marvil ran a time of 2:12.93, securing fourth place.
Notre Dame showed a strong performance in the men’s 200-meter dash. Junior Harvey Smith, who earned third place in the 400-meter dash earlier, won the 200 meter with a time of 21.71. He was followed in second place by junior Alex Groesch, with a time of 21.91.
Senior Madison Lena and junior Anthony Shivers had strong performances in the weight throw, posting distances of 14.71 meters and 19.47 meters, respectively.
In the women’s 3000-meter run, freshman Anna Rohrer ran a strong time of 9:17.87, securing her the second-place spot in the race. Anna Rohrer was an All-American performer during this past cross-country season.
In the 60-meter dash, graduate student Kaila Barber earned third place with her time of 7.56, an all-time best for her.
Junior Taylor Craft performed well in the triple jump, with her jump of 11.40 meters being enough for third place.
