NIIC First-Round Doubles Consolation Bracket
FLUSHING, N.Y. & MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team completed its Friday slate with a handful of wins as a pair of seniors wrapped their stay at the last national championship of the fall and the rest of the Irish squad competed at the Gopher Invitational at the University of Minnesota.
Seniors Josh Hagar and Eddy Covalschi emerged victorious from their first-round doubles consolation final of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship with a 7-6(4), 7-6(4) victory over No. 42 Alex Gasson and Yannik James of Denver. It was the second time this fall Hagar and Covalschi defeated Gasson and James, having picked up the other win in the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships.
At the Gopher Invitational, in which players play a doubles set followed by singles matches against their doubles opponents and points are accumulated by wins, the Irish snared four singles wins and two doubles victories.
Freshmen Guillermo Cabrera and Johnathan Small advanced in the bracket after a 3-0 showing against Drake’s Calum MacGeogh and Ben Wood. The Irish pair defeated the Bulldogs 6-4 in doubles while Cabrera downed MacGeogh 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 and Small upended Wood 6-4, 7-5.
Junior Brendon Kempin and sophomore Daniel Rayl defeated Boise State’s Harvey Shackleton and Ryland McDermitt 6-1 in doubles. In singles, freshman Matt Gamble outlasted Minnesota’s Justyn Levin 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 and junior Drew Dawson cruised past Gopher Jeremy Lynn 6-1 6-1.
